“It was rightly said of Sade that his is the work of a moralist. Erotic books are almost all alike in this respect: either they are working toward the elaboration of a revolutionary morality, or they echo the morality of their age, against which they are protesting.”

This is the story of Sigismond Pons, a Frenchman who leaves his young wife and son for a short business trip to Spain. Arriving in Barcelona, he finds a letter from home. Opening it, he glimpses, in frozen horror, a few words: '..threw herself off the tower..died instantly..'

It took me a shockingly long while to get through this book, mainly because I never had more than a few minutes at a time to read, but certainly not because it was tedious. In fact, I enjoyed the smooth and elegant prose (well, the translation of the prose, since I read it in English) and found the narrative, slim as it may have been, very absorbing. Not a lot happens — true, but what does happen feels real, and genuinely experienced. The concrete observations of Sigismond Pons's wanderings arou..more

The book is almost entirely descriptions of the bars, streets, whores, his wife, his father, etc. - the action and plot paragraphs would have filled no more than 5 pages. By the end of the book I was skimming, something I really hate to do, because I couldn't stand any more boring descriptions yet I did want to find out what was in the letter.

Mandiargues is a pretty middling late surrealist. He gets the desire aspects of surrealism (not really the most interesting part to me), but not seemingly much else. Really, I think his greatest accomplishment may have been helping the fantastic Nelly Kaplan get into print, but while unfortunately none of her fictions have made it into English outside of scattered stories and excerpts, Mandiargues has been widely translated and published, as in this rather juvenile series of tableaux of ostensib..more
